PVHS Honors Top Students

At 6:45 p.m. on May 12, members of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 2022 who had placed in the top 15% academically gathered in the school auditorium with parents, administrators, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) board members, and invited faculty. The purpose of the event was to acknowledge the accomplishments of the students.

School counselor Jason Davis welcomed the gathering and told students "Your work has made a lasting impression."

Assistant principal Amy Koberstein spoke to the parents and students, saying, "To have earned a spot at this ceremony, you must have learned the importance of working hard ... and never settling for less than you know you are capable of accomplishing."

Assistant superintendent Rich Eby said that the district began an Apple Education One-to-One Initiative 14 years ago and the Mass Customized Learning (MCL) journey eight years ago. "You helped detail what it meant to be a true MCL culture," he said to the students. In the MCL model, the curriculum is adjusted to meet each student's needs. To reflect the students' ownership of their learning and the teacher's role in facilitating the learning process, students are called learners and teachers are called facilitators.

PVSD board vice president Christian Brackbill said to the group, "You entered as students and you're leaving as learners. You entered with teachers and you're leaving with facilitators."

Each student was called to the front of the auditorium to be congratulated by board members and superintendent Erik Orndorff. Students were asked to briefly discuss their plans after graduation and name the teacher they invited to the ceremony along with the reason for the invite. Each student received a special certificate.

Students who were honored were Emily Ammon, Olivia Ammon, Emily Diller, Emily Eby, Maxwell Feeser, Sierra Fisher, Molly Groff, Joshua Hershey, Kylie McGowan, Dylan Ratjavong, Alias Reiter, Liana Rogers, Julia Shaubach, Ethan Smucker, Deena Stoltzfus, Madison Weaver, Hailey Yothers, and Tyler Zook.
