NAMI To Offer Support Groups

After being suspended because of the pandemic, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Dauphin County will offer its first in-person support group starting on Tuesday, July 27, at 7 p.m. The program will be held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1100 Colonial Road, Harrisburg.

The support group is open to family members, friends and caregivers of those who have a mental illness. The informational group aims to help attendees understand and cope with mental illness and to provide the strength and support they need to face difficult situations.

In addition, NAMI Family-to-Family, an educational support group for family caregivers of individuals with mental illness, will be offered for eight weeks beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The course is designed to help family members understand and support their loved ones who are living with mental illness while maintaining their own well-being.

The course will include information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program will be taught by trained teachers who have family members with a mental illness. Family-to Family is offered at no cost to participants.

Registration for Family-to-Family is required. Specific meeting locations, dates and times will be provided at registration. To register or for more information, email Marge Chapman at mchapman@nami-dauphincounty.org or call 717-233-1164.
