Library System Plans Book Discussion

The Dauphin County Library System is celebrating its Author of the Year, Susan Orlean, by inviting community members to read and discuss her book, "The Orchid Thief." The online book discussion will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

"The Orchid Thief" is about the 1994 arrest of John Laroche, Dennis and Vinson Oseceola, and Russel Bowers following their theft of rare orchids from a wild swamp in south Florida. Laroche planned to clone the orchids and sell them for a small fortune to collectors. Their arrests set off a legal controversy that brought together environmentalists, Native American activists, and orchid collectors.

As Author of the Year, Orlean will participate live at a free public event on Saturday, May 8. Details will be posted at http://www.dcls.org/SusanOrlean as they become finalized. To receive updates via email, readers may visit http://www.dcls.org/OrleanAlerts.

The book discussion is free and for adults. Registration is required. To register, readers may visit http://www.dcls.org/SusanOrlean or call 717-234-4961, option 6.
