Chanticleer to Perform in Concert

The Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer will present a concert titled "Our American Journey" on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by the Lancaster Art Song Society, the program will be held at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.

Chanticleer was founded in San Francisco in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, and it quickly became a prolific recording and touring ensemble, selling more than one million recordings and performing thousands of live concerts to audiences around the globe. Rooted in Renaissance tradition, Chanticleer blends classical, gospel, jazz, and popular music, and it champions newly commissioned works and fresh arrangements.

"Our American Journey" celebrates America's 250th anniversary by showcasing the diverse voices, songs, harmonies, and rhythms of the nation's shared musical heritage. The cornerstone of the program is a new commission by composer Trevor Weston demonstrating the link between traditional American hymnody and African American spirituals. Other repertoire traces the progression of the American choral tradition from black gospel quartets to barbershop quartets to vocal jazz. The program also includes settings of traditional American bluegrass tunes and folk songs, like "Calling My Children Home" and "Shenandoah," as well as arrangements of more contemporary American classics, like Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" and "Home" from "The Wiz."
