Dishing Up Tradition

Warm your belly and help your community at the same time at the Mountville Lions Club chicken pot pie sale. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. until sold out, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. It will be available for takeout only, and containers will be provided by the club. Homemade desserts, including pies and cakes, will be for sale as well. Lions brooms will also be available for purchase.

"This is really good pot pie," said Eric Weaver, first vice president of the Lions Club. "It's made fresh. We cook the chicken and roll out the dough. The whole club participates, and it's a great way to support the community and support the Lions Club."

It's a major endeavor for the club to prepare the meals. Each sale uses 400 pounds of chicken, 200 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of flour and 45 dozen eggs.

The club hosts a spring and fall pot pie sale on the third Saturday of March and October, which the group has been doing for more than 60 years.

"It's a Mountville tradition that people support because it's not only for a good cause, but it's a tasty meal at a reasonable price," Weaver shared. "The pot pie suppers are our main fundraisers, along with having roller ball stands at the Mountville Fire Co. Carnival and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival."

Proceeds from the pot pie sale are used to support various Lions projects.

"Projects supported by the club include funding scholarships at Hempfield High School, supporting Beacon Lodge - a nonprofit camp in Union County that offers programs for those who are blind or challenged physically in other ways - maintaining the pavilion at the borough park, sponsoring Team River Runner and other projects that help people with vision impairment," Weaver said. "We also support the Columbia Food Bank and support the Mountville Community Picnic."

Additionally, the club collects used eyeglasses that are sent to be repaired and refurbished to help vision-impaired people around the world.

"The public is welcome to drop off eyeglasses when they pick up their pot pie," Weaver said.

The Mountville Lions Club will also host its annual Christmas food drive outside the Mountville Public Library. More information will be coming soon for that event.

The club is always looking for new members who want to serve their community, Weaver said.

"We have great camaraderie while working to make our world a better place," he added. "Being a part of this club is a great way to help out your local community and enjoy fellowship at the same time."

The Mountville Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Reformed UCC, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. For more information on the club, contact Weaver at 717-368-2810.
