Get your kicks on Route 66.

Humane Pennsylvania will present its annual "Art for Arf's Sake" auction on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. This year's auction will feature a Route 66 theme, something organizers say is as "wide open as the American highway."

Having a theme is one thing, but Humane Pennsylvania takes it to the next level. Art pieces featuring the iconic cities and towns along Route 66 will be available for purchase in the auction, an auction that will have 66 live items, 66 silent items and 66 "best and final" items.

"It's the 100-year anniversary of Route 66, so that's how we ended up with it," said Karel Minor, CEO and president of Humane PA. "Once we got a theme, that makes it easy to come up with fun things. ... We don't like dull events any more than our guests do, so we try and make it interesting every year."

The doors will open for the event at 5:30 p.m.; the live auction will commence at 7 p.m.

Auction items will include trips, experiences and gift baskets, as well as one-of-a-kind artwork created by local artists. Some of the paintings will feature pets.

Sticking with the old-school theme, no online bidding will be available this year. All bidding will be done in person, and Minor said that no phones are needed for the process. In the past, items in the silent auction were available online.

The food and drinks from the event will also be in theme. The culinary portion of the event will feature classic dishes inspired by cities that sit along Route 66, like Santa Monica, Chicago, Albuquerque and St. Louis.

"It should be something from Tex-Mex to health food in Santa Monica," Minor said. "The theme also goes for drinks. We're basically going to have signature drinks that are representative of the cities that we're in. Of course, if people are not a fan of adult drinks, we have all kinds of other things."

Proceeds from the event will benefit Humane Pennsylvania and its programs, which include pet adoption and animal rescue services and nonprofit veterinary hospitals in Berks and Lancaster counties. It also operates the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Center for Animal Welfare and Dog Park, a free public dog park at 503 S. Center Road, Birdsboro.

Since 2005, more than $2 million has been raised by Art for Arf's Sake. What started as a generic art auction has evolved into a massive fundraiser that gets its own theme every year, generating excitement in the local art community.
