When the flea market winds down at Root's Country Market and Auction on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the action will shift from bargain hunting to horsepower. As the flea market vendors pack up, the grounds will fill with cars, trucks and motorcycles for the annual Fall Car, Truck and Cycle Show, running from 4 to 7 p.m. at 705 Graystone Road, Manheim.

"After the flea market closes at 3, we will fill the field with cars," said Chris Fletcher, flea market manager and special events coordinator. "The show is open to any type of vehicle."

Fletcher noted that he's particularly looking for Jeeps to enter the show, as there is a special trophy just for a Jeep.

"Everybody's able to come and enter this show, whether you bring a $500 beater car or something that you'd find at a nice auction house," he said, adding that a variety of trophies will be awarded in various categories.

Door prizes will be drawn every half hour, and awards will be presented beginning at 6:30 p.m. Winners must be present to receive an award.

Proceeds from the show will benefit GiGi's Playhouse, a nonprofit that provides free educational, therapeutic and career training programs for people of all ages with Down syndrome.

"Our judges are actually participants and families from GiGi's," Fletcher said. "We also have a trophy just for GiGi's, where they choose the best, most outgoing and accepting car."

Fletcher, who became the flea market manager three years ago, knows firsthand the benefits of GiGi's Playhouse. His son is a participant there, and he's a volunteer with GiGi Fit, an on-site exercise program.

Root's will be open for regular Tuesday activities during the show, so participants and visitors are encouraged to visit the vendors and food stands at the market.

Anyone who enters a vehicle in the show will receive a booklet for discounts and giveaways at various stands throughout the market, Fletcher said.

He said the car show has grown steadily over the years, with about 60 vehicles participating last year. There is room for 130 on-site.

Root's has held a spring and fall car show for many years, but it moved to Tuesday evenings a few years ago.

"We used to have it on a Saturday, but we started doing it on Tuesdays to help bring people into the market that day," Fletcher said. "It helps to bring in an evening crowd."

He encourages anyone to enter a vehicle or just come out for an event that benefits a good cause.

"It helps support the community and the people at GiGi's Playhouse," he said. "It's a fun time for everyone."

There is a discount for advance registration of a vehicle for the show. Day-of registration will also be accepted. The entrance for the event is located at Root's Old Mill Flea Market, and vehicles should park at 720 Graystone Road, Manheim.
