The 14th annual Atglen Community Day, featuring food, craft vendors, children's activities and entertainment, will be presented by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church (PPC) and the Atglen Public Library (APL) on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.

Each year, the organizing committee plans a new attraction; last year, it was a combination rock wall and bungee trampoline. This year, it will be a zip line, like it was in 2024.

"It goes right down Ridge Avenue," said Cristi Hahn, manager of Atglen Borough. "It can go as long as there's no power lines or anything. ... It comes from on a tractor trailer, and it takes them a couple of hours to set it up. ... I was amazed, it was really popular. Kids and adults loved it."

Entertainment will include Matt Holub, who will perform pop music on an acoustic guitar; a presentation by Critter Connections at 2 p.m.; and a science show by Innovation Train at 11:30 a.m., which will consist of hands-on science programs and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs.

"Matt Holub has done music for us every year since the beginning," Hahn said. "He's a beloved member of the community, and I think it would be disappointing if we didn't have him."

Like last year, there will be a dunk tank. At the moment, an officer with the Parkesburg Police Department and a teacher at Octorara Area High School have committed to taking a shift in the tank. Christiana Fire Company will also have one of its trucks on the scene.

Trustees from PPC will provide food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and fresh-cut fries. The deacons will also do a baked goods table.

Craft vendors will also be set up along the perimeter of the park, and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations. The live auction will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be an opportunity to win prizes through a random drawing, including gift baskets and gift cards, all of which have been donated from the local community and businesses.

Auction items in the past have included generators, pools, Philadelphia Phillies tickets and themed baskets.

There will also be children's games and activities. For a fee, children can get unlimited games and do the bounce house inflatable obstacle course. Those who bring canned foods to donate to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) will receive a discount.

Proceeds from Atglen Community Day are given to the APL and other local organizations, including fire companies, the ambulance association and the OAFC, among others. Roughly 1,000 people attend the annual event.

"Atglen Community Day is kind of a twofold event," Hahn said. "First and foremost, it's a community event to bring out residents, kids, adults, everybody and just a fun day of talking to your neighbors and getting to hang out with one another. But the other side is that it's a fundraising event, and all the money that's raised that day, all of it goes back out to nonprofits in our community."

There is a cost associated with the food, zip line and children's games. All of the other activities are free for the community.
