It's a space for big kids and little kids. In fact, that's part of the Hands-on House's magic and charm, that it brings out the kid in all of us.

Moira Brennan is a big kid.

"My favorite part about volunteering at Hands-on House is 100% the kids," said Moira, a junior at Manheim Township High School. "I absolutely love having the opportunity to watch them be creative, make new friends and grow into amazing people. It is so incredible to see how compassionate and imaginative their young minds are."

One of the things Moira did during her summer break from school was volunteer at Hands-on House, Children's Museum of Lancaster, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Moira was dedicated, compassionate and conscientious, but she had fun too.

"I found out about Hands-on House opportunities through friends who have worked and volunteered at the museum before and loved it," said Moira. "To volunteer at Hands-on House, I completed the quick online application on the Hands-on House website. The application asks what type of activities I was interested in doing at the museum and provides an optional opportunity to submit a resume as well. From there, I was asked to do a volunteer interview with Mrs. (Colleen) Buck for her to learn a little more about what I was looking to do at the museum."

Moira's responsibilities as a student volunteer at the Hands-on House included working in the art studio, resetting toys and supplies, cleaning and interacting with guests. Moira also served as a camp counselor, which involved ensuring the safety and enjoyment of campers and leading artistic and reactional activities.

Moira's typical volunteer work week included four 4-hour shifts. She was one of four student volunteers to work at the Hands-on House this summer.

"I have always enjoyed being around and working with kids, so it is amazing to have the opportunity to give back while doing something I absolutely love," said Moira. "I honestly went into the experience with an open mind and few expectations - I was just so excited for the opportunity to work with kids. I really have learned so much from the campers and visitors at Hands-on House during this opportunity. It has been so inspiring to see how unique and wonderful every kid truly is."

Moira is at a point in her young life when she is beginning to envision what her post-high school future might look like. But no matter which direction she chooses, her volunteer experience at the Hands-on House can only be a benefit.

"Although I am not entirely sure what my future will look like, I know that I definitely want to continue working with kids," said Moira. "Right now, I am very interested in attending a four-year university and possibly pursuing a career in special education."

An interactive place for children, Hands-on House, which was established by volunteers more than 40 years ago, hosts more than 48,000 visitors each year.

"The time I have spent being surrounded by such wonderful staff, amazing kids and other passionate volunteers has truly inspired me to keep doing what I love," said Moira. "I am so grateful for this opportunity, as it has taught me responsibility, leadership and the importance of giving back to the community. There is nothing more rewarding than following your passions."
