Bird Club Slates Meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Aspen Simone and Hannah Michelle Brower, founders of Philly Pigeon Tours, will present "The Past, Present, and Future of Our Relationship With Pigeons."

The speakers will cover 10,000 years of pigeon history, starting with the birds' domestication. They will explore humans' mutually beneficial relationship with and positive feelings toward pigeons, as well as the relationship's turning sour in the 1960s. They will talk about how the future might look different and why they think empathy for pigeons is crucial at this time.

Simone has more than a decade of professional experience in civic technology, working for agencies and companies focused on regional planning, zoning, and sustainability, as well as on federal benefits and environmental cleanup programs. Simone holds a bachelor's degree in geography from Dartmouth College, spanning natural and urban geography, as well as a master's degree in conflict resolution from UMass Boston.

A lifelong birder, Brower got her start in nature education during high school at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, and she holds a Master of Science in epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She also teaches about bugs with Insectopia and is working toward a professional certificate in restorative justice from Suffolk University.

The program is free of charge. For more information, call 717-891-8145 or 717-725-2717. Information about the LCBC is available at http://www.lancasterbirdclub.org, http://www.facebook.com/lancasterbirdclub, and http://www.instagram.com/lancasterbirdclub.
