Serving Up Talent

Spend an afternoon at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim, and enjoy the annual Strawberry Sundae Talent Show on Sunday, June 7. Strawberry sundaes will be served from 4 to 6 p.m., and the talent show will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the church's upcoming mission program through Appalachia Service Project (ASP).

"The strawberries provided will be picked locally by our ASP team," said Doug Winters, ASP trip coordinator. "There will be ice cream and a variety of cakes to make your own sundaes. At 6:30, there will be a talent show in our sanctuary featuring a variety of musical acts performed by church members and members of the community."

The talent show will include a celloist, along with several pianists and vocalists.

"Our Salem bell choir will perform, as well as our Salem Singers," Winters said.

The event has been a tradition at Salem United Methodist Church for decades.

"My predecessor, Don Yingst, started this fundraiser when our church started going on ASP 44 years ago," Winters shared. "It has been a tremendous blessing and continues to be as our team of volunteers grows every year."

Winters explained that ASP is a mission located in the Appalachian Mountain regions of the eastern United States. It serves in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina.

"The purpose behind it is to repair homes for individuals who are physically and/or financially unable to maintain their properties to make them warmer, safer and drier," he said. "The work that's done includes, but is not limited to, foundation work, roofing, interior repair and plumbing."

The projects have another component as well.

"In addition to the construction work, it's also a relational ministry getting to form relationships with the families (whose) homes you're working on and getting to share the love of Christ with them," Winters said.

He hopes the community will come out to enjoy a fun afternoon for a good cause.

"We would encourage folks to come to enjoy local strawberries, a time of fellowship and good talent," he said.

No registration is required to attend the event, and while there is no cost to attend, a freewill offering will be received.
