Cole Portz Head Crusader in Waiting No More

He's an advocate. He's a role model. He's a teacher.

Cole Portz is a coach.

Earlier this month, Portz was hired as the next head coach of the boys' basketball program at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). Portz graduated from LCHS in 2017.

"I am truly grateful for this opportunity," said Portz. "I would not have been blessed with this opportunity if not for the remarkable coaches, athletes, staff, alumni and friends I'm so fortunate to be surrounded by. They put my name on it, but it's our program."

Ultimately, Portz had an interim designation removed from his title, after stepping up as an assistant coach and taking the Crusader reins when former head coach Joe Klazas stepped down in December of last season. The LCHS administration landed on Portz following a search for Klazas' permanent successor that produced a strong pool of candidates.

"Cole brings a clear vision for our program and a strong ability to connect with and develop student-athletes," said LCHS athletic director Nate Leonard. "We are confident in his leadership and his ability to build a program that reflects the values and standards of Lancaster Catholic."

Last year, the Crusaders went 10-17 overall, under a combination of first Klazas and then Portz. The season represented a stark improvement over a 2024-25 campaign during which Lancaster Catholic went 2-20.

"At Lancaster Catholic, athletics are an extension of our mission to form young men academically, spiritually and socially," said Kyla Hockley, president of LCHS. "Cole understands that calling; values the legacy of Lancaster Catholic; and will lead our students with strength, character and purpose."

The interview process that ultimately identified Portz as the Crusaders' next head coach was conducted by a panel that included school administrators, members of the athletic department and teachers and board members.

Over the last five decades, LCHS has established itself as one of the most decorated boys' basketball programs in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

Under Klazas, the Crusaders captured four Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District Three championships.

LCHS is located at 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster.
