New Holland Farmer's 5K Planned

The New Holland Farmer's 5K will return for its 21st year on Saturday, June 13, at the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street. The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Garden Spot High School and Middle School cross-country boys' and girls' teams.

Registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m., and registration will conclude at 8:15 a.m. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine, and runners and walkers are encouraged to sign up.

This year's event has a new director, Cera Gaston, who is in her first year as the head coach for the Garden Spot cross-country teams. In addition, the booster club has partnered with Pretzel City Sports for online registration and professional timing of the event this year.

The annual road race is known for the relative ease of the course, which will follow Jackson Street east to Ranck Road, where it will turn right. Participants will turn right again at Airport Road and again at Windsock Way before picking up Runway Avenue and returning to Airport Road. Runners will once again turn right to follow Kinzer Avenue, which will take them back to a right on Jackson Street to the park.

There will be a water course around the halfway point of the race, and snack and drinks will be available after the racers finish. Awards will be presented to the top overall male and female winners, including a gift card from Fleet Feet and a large cowbell. The current course records are 15 minutes, 20 seconds for the men, set in 2023 by David Lutgen, and 18:12 for the women, set in 2012 by Aimee Taylor. In addition, the top male and female runners in various age groups - 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and over - will receive awards. In keeping with the farming theme of the event, cow bell awards with the new race logo will be given to age group winners.

Organizers hope to have at least 100 participants and raise $3,000 for the cross-country team through the 5K. The proceeds will help to fund warmup gear for freshmen, team T-shirts, participation in invitationals, the end-of-season banquet, senior gifts, any postseason expenses not covered by the school, and more.
