Annual Mother-Son, Community Paint Events Set

Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) will hold its third annual mother-son event on Saturday, May 16.

After last year's science-themed night and 2024's game night, MCC will host a mother-son scavenger hunt at 10 a.m. at Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown.

"I think it'll turn out really good," said Connie Brown-Weber, who organizes the annual mother-son events. "Families look forward to this every year."

MCC also runs daddy-daughter dance events annually, which invited the question of whether a similar event could be viable.

"We thought that we should be doing something for moms and their boys," Brown-Weber said. "I have a committee, and each year we'll pick out what the theme will be for the following year."

Thus, the mother-son events were born. Being close to Mother's Day is an added bonus. This year's event will feature two different scavenger hunts, one for younger kids and one for older children. Younger kids will be searching for more broad objects like leaves and rocks, while older children will be looking for tougher-to-find items like bugs.

This year's mother-son event will be the first to be held outdoors.

"We just thought it would be nice to get them out in nature and just explore," Brown-Weber said.

The event isn't limited to just birth mothers; stepmoms, grandmothers, aunts or other adult female mentors are welcome. Last year, MCC had around 50 families participate. This year, Brown-Weber said organizers are hoping to increase that tally.

Preregistration is required at http://www.wearethatchurch.churchcenter.com/calendar. There is a cost to sign up, and a picnic lunch is included in the price of registration.

MCC will also hold a free sensation kids gathering community paint night on Friday, June 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church's main campus, 4221 Main St., Elverson.

The event is specially designed for parents of children with special needs who could use a brief window of rest. Parents will paint while their kids do activities with trained professionals.

"That event is exceptional because it gives parents an opportunity for a little bit of a break," said Amy Marburger, who is involved with the ministry. "Connie has such a great team that's all trained on how to navigate kids with special needs."

"It's all nurses that have worked with children with special needs, or teachers and aides that work with kids with special needs in the school district, or they might work in a day care setting where they've had training through their center," Brown-Weber said.

MCC will also hold various free family events throughout the summer, including a game night at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5, and an ice cream social at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19. For more information about the ministry or its events, visit the aforementioned link or the MCC Facebook page.

"When my kids were little, I would always look for free events to do with my kids," Brown-Weber said. "I just want to be able to provide a fun, safe place for kids to go and have activities that they can do with their families."

MCC holds Sunday services at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. at its Elverson (main) campus and at 4:30 p.m. at its Birdsboro campus, 144 S. Walnut St., Birdsboro.
